Notes From A Greek Island

First Quake of the Year Felt

I was just sitting doing some bits & pieces on the pc today when just before 5pm local time the rumbling started. Aye, aye I thought, I heard that sound a couple of times last year & sure enough within seconds the house began to shake. It's a bit of a strange sensation. As there are a couple of wooden sliding doors in my house that rattle even when you just walk past them, they of course started to rattle too. I just sat tight & pushed my keyboard a little further onto my desk - just in case it moved & fell (though I really don't think it was going to go anywhere)
The tremor was registered very quickly on the seismic activity website I use. It's shown on the site as registering as 5.4 magnitude & it's centre was just N/E of Kefalonia which is the Ionian island just North of Zakynthos. The actual entry is that which is listed for 25th March 2007 at 13:57:57. It would also appear from the site that there were a couple of after shocks but I didn't feel any of those.
I wonder if this will be the start of a series of tremors as was experienced here around April last year.
I wouldn't say that I found it disturbing & I know that they are just part of life in Greece & as this is now my home they are just part of my life too. I fully expect to experience many more of these tremors over time.

  • Hopefully there won't be any big tremors, i've never been on the island when tremors happen. And i suppose it could be frightening the first time or the second, Just make sure everything is nailed down. And take care
